15 Clever Moving Hacks that Will Change Your Moving Experience!

What makes a move become something that you don’t dread?

There are some really “fun” hacks that add color and lots of hope to the moving process. Take a look at our list. It could change the way you prepare for your next move!

From putting together a design of your new home to color coding and packing smart, these tips will change the way you view any move.

First, go ahead and admit it: moving is not easy. Even though you know the exact date and time and also the moving company you will use, you will still have thoughts and reservations about your move. That is normal!

Tells friends that you are moving, and chances are their eyes will glaze over and some may even run for the door out of fear that you will tag them to help.

Take it easy!

You can navigate through any move and keep your sanity. There are lots of tips on the internet that will help you and your relocation team. The few that have been listed here have been tried and tested and they work.

  • Make Sure to Pad Your Plates This is one of the most important things you can do during packing. You want to properly pad your dinner plates and all that goes with these. Wrap them in lots of packing paper and use towels in between them before putting them in the packing box. Movers will be careful, but you never know what can shift or fall!
  • Fill Nail Holes Though the best thing to use to fill nail holes is always spackling compound, lot of people will “hack” their way past this step by using either white toothpaste or white soap! An absolute favorite is 3M Small Hole Repair High Strength. It is an all-in-one applicator tool and allows for Easy Repair of Nicks and Nail Holes. It even includes a putty knife, spackle, and sanding pad for wall repairs.
  • Reuse Toilet Paper and Paper Towel Tubes to keep wires and cables organized. There is no need to toss every cable or cord away even if the device is no longer used. Toilet paper tubes are the perfect size and will hold just about any length of cord. You can even label them with a marker. Fold wires and place them inside the tube. Then, place the tube in a colorful plastic basket for storage.
  • Seal Drawers This is a fun packing “hack.” Instead of packing all your desk and kitchen drawers in boxes and then have to unpack them in your new home, wrap them in clear plastic wrap like Cling Free or any other brand that works for you. You get the idea: you are wrapping the drawer, so the items do not fall out. Then you can slide it back into your desk or hutch.
  • Put the Room Name on the Box. This is an easy one. You should have a layout drawn up of your new home and printed out for your relocation team. Be sure to label each room. Names of rooms correspond with the layout and are added to each box. Then members of your relocation team can easily find their way through your house and delivery items quickly and easily.
  • Pack Clothes on Hangers Leave your clothes on their hangers and move them in your car or you can fold items gently and place them in boxes. You can move them in bunches in garbage bags while still on the hangers. It’s easy and cheaper than purchasing wardrobe boxes.
  • Use Suitcases and Bags Take advantage of what you have and use things like these for shoes and closet things that could be left behind. Just make sure you label what each one contains. That way you will know where things are on Monday when you return to work!
  • Create a Moving Key You can keep everything running smoothly and avoid the chaos by having a moving room key. This is a color-coded guide that tells you where everything should go. You create this and then follow it through as you pack. This is helpful because you don’t have to sit and bark out orders over and over. Just hand your helpers the key and they will know where things belong.
  • Cut Out Handles of Boxes Before you know it, boxes can become very heavy. Cut triangles in boxes beginning about 1/3 of the way down to create handles for easy carrying.
  • Store Hardware Correctly During a move, we have all lost nails, bolts, screws, or even handles to that special cabinet. Use freezer or lunch plastic bags to keep these items safe, and don’t just toss them all in together. Use different baggies and take a marker to label each one. You can do this with larger plastic bags for things like TV controls!
  • Use Egg Cartons for Jewelry This is the perfect solution for your casual jewelry. These will help you keep everything tangle free and organized during your move. Once you have everything placed inside the cartons, seal them with packing tape and stack them in a box with the correct labeling.
  • Keep Doors Unlocked Here’s a “hack” that truly works. Instead of allowing a door to close and even lock, put a rubber band around the doorknob to prevent it from latching. Loop a rubber band around a doorknob so it makes an “X” that presses the latch open. This trick is especially helpful when you’re unloading a moving van or even on a casual day when you need to bring groceries inside.
  • Mark Fragile Items Remember to mark boxes that contain breakables as fragile. To be on the really safe side, don’t over pack a box that contains breakable things like fine China and collectables. Whether you’ve hired movers; or if you are moving yourself, you don’t want someone to be rough with those boxes.
  • Use Tough Large Tote Bags Believe it or not, IKEA bags and other items like them are great ways to move smaller items like toys, towels, blankets, and items that are not fragile but certainly need to stay together.
  • Use Disposable Dinnerware On a moving day, the last thing you want to do is to pull our dishes and glasses. In fact, you may just use disposable dinner plates and cups for a few days just to save time dishwashing!
