Moving Services that Fit Your Lifestyle
Moving is a necessary part of life.
It is not unusual to hear someone say: Moving was a great idea until I started to pack!
As we approach 2025, more and more people are changing their locations for various reasons. Forbes reports, “28.2 million Americans moved in 2022.”
“Over the past five years, from 2018 to 2021, U.S. Census data showed that the number of people moving decreased from 32.4 million individuals moving in 2018 to just over 27 million in 2021—a drop of around 1.6 million people yearly.
“However, there was an increase in 2022. For the first time in five years, 2022 saw 28.2 million people move to new locations. This increase marks a break in the previous downward trend and could indicate potential shifts in the underlying factors influencing moving decisions.”
Moving Trends are up for 2025
Regardless of the numbers, moving is a part of life. Each one of us will move to another location. Some will move multiple times and have the experience to do it easily. Do you? And do you know the services that you could need for your move?
By far, hiring a moving team is a great way to simplify the moving process. While it ups the price tag of any move, this also has the ability to save you in other areas—physical, mental, and emotional.
Moving is what our parents called “back-breaking work.” It takes time and money, even if you are doing a DIY move. When everything is put down on a spreadsheet, there’s a lot to be gained from the relief that comes from passing on responsibility to a professional relocation team.
If you choose to go with a moving team, you will still have plenty to do— Planning, packing, and directing the move—not to mention making sure lights are turned on and the movers have a layout of your new digs.
Professional movers take the heavy lifting off your hands!
A professional relocation team can make the whole day run smoother, and that gives you more time to do important things like organizing the details of a move, decorating, and making sure all the utilities are on and an extra bag is packed for your first night in your new home.
More than likely, when you first start out in life, you look for friends to help you. Saturday afternoons with a rented truck, pizza, and cold drinks were the ticket!
But as soon as we could afford it (and maybe even before we really could), we relied on movers to get your things securely packed, transported, and reassembled. Most people never regret making that decision. The money spent on professional movers is always money well spent.
Here are the seven things you should always consider when you’re looking for a moving company.
Listen for good, if not great, recommendations from people you trust. You can “Google” reviews about a company, but if you know someone who has actually used the moving company that you are considering, then that is the best review out there. It’s possible someone you know had a bad experience with an otherwise highly rated company. Likewise, perhaps someone had a wonderful experience with a relatively new company that doesn’t have a strong web presence.
Longevity does matter
Companies that are successful and have been in the business for many years are usually the ones that have great client relationships.
Get online and read the reviews. It is great to do extra homework. Get online and search for reviews of the companies you are considering. Today, people will leave reviews especially. If they’ve had a great experience or a bad one, they will tell you about it. Then it is up to you to decide.
Hire a team with a successful track record. A moving company that has been in operation for a few years is usually the way to go. Between reading about the company, talking with a representative, and checking the online reviews, you should have a good general idea of their record as far as being on time, keeping rates fair, and maintaining the condition of possessions.
Make sure they are licensed and have insurance. Never use a moving company that isn’t licensed and insured. Period. Anyone can gather a group of people together, rent a truck, and tell you that they can get you from point A to point B. Professional teams that are licensed and insured are legally bound to protect your property.
Don’t Assume, Ask Questions
Interstate movers are required to register with the U.S. Department of Transportation, after which they’re given a unique USDOT number. You can ensure a company has a valid DOT number and insurance by searching this database provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Regulations are on a state-by-state basis, so check to see what is required. When it comes to intrastate licensing laws in your state, do your research, especially if you feel uncertain.
Ask any potential mover about their rates. Reading the small print matters! Ask them to be transparent, and the same goes for you.
Make sure a potential moving team is a good fit for you. You want to work with people that have a good reputation and also are easy to communicate with. If you sense that the communication and planning are hitting a roadblock, then it could be time to talk with another relocation team.
Beware of unethical movers. Competition among moving teams can be strong. Listen to what your potential moving representative is telling you. Ask plenty of questions and know what feels right to you. Verifying a moving company is the right thing to do. Check for an active license, look up their service records, and make sure they have a valid physical address (and not just a P.O. box). You also want to be wary of any mover that asks for a deposit, especially if they’re asking for more than 20 percent.
Moving Option Facts
Here’s a list of moving facts that can help you make the right decision!
Full-service Movers handle local and interstate moves from beginning to end. Services offered by full-service movers include packing, unpacking, loading and unloading, transportation, customer support, furniture assembly and disassembly, and more.
A Local Mover usually deals with people who are moving nearby. Intrastate movers typically charge an hourly rate and offer loading and transportation services.
Truck Rental If you’re taking on a DIY move, you’ll need a moving truck and people to pitch in to help! Think through this option carefully. Time and DIY expenses can make hiring a professional mover much more attractive.
Storage Many moving companies offer short-term storage, and that is a plus if you need storage services before, during, or after the moving process.
Auto Shipping A job relocation can take you across the country. That can be too much for a DIY move. Checking with a moving company that has the ability to move you anywhere at any time saves plenty of stress.
Removal of Junk We talk about decluttering a lot. If you don’t need it and haven’t used it in a year, donate it or call a junk removal team. Professionals in this area can haul things away and dispose of them properly.
International Movers Whether you’re moving across the border or overseas, make sure you hire a moving team that can work with you to get you to your new destination safely and professionally. You will want to work with a team that handles everything from customs paperwork to worldwide shipping.
Boxes and Packing Supplies: Ready to start packing? Not so fast! Make sure you sit down with your relocation team and get a detailed plan in place. Then, purchase moving boxes and begin to pack correctly. Most moving companies offer moving supplies for sale and packing services. (moving.com)
