History is important to communities. It provides a sense of belonging and even pride. Opelika’s Promenade and the Lee County Courthouse offer stunning neoclassical revival-style structures built in 1896 and are still the county’s working courthouse today.
Opelika’s downtown is the Northside Historic District. We encourage potential home buyers to take a step back in time with a stroll through the neighborhood that features turn-of-the-century homes restored to their original grandeur.
The Whitfield-Searcy House, a Queen Anne Victorian home built in 1895 that now serves as the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, is another historic Opelika landmark that should not be missed.
Enjoy the Street Art Community
“Not to be outdone by Nashville’s ‘I love you so much’ mural and Birmingham’s iconic “It’s Nice to Have You,” Opelika has its own set of Insta-worthy spots. Find the bright blue “Bless You” mural for a taste of Southern culture. Rain or shine, don’t leave downtown without finding the Yellow Umbrella mural.” (SoulGrow Magazine)
Shop!
When it comes to Opelika’s shopping scene, there’s plenty to keep a person busy. Also, remember, when choosing a location for your new home, it’s important to study the convenience of your location. Nearby Auburn has shopping and dining opportunities, but Opelika has plenty to offer.
Start at Southern Crossing for upscale home décor and gifts. For women’s clothing, Studio 3:19 is a trending spot for ladies ready to wear. Sustainable men’s clothier Griff Goods offers much for this hip space that seems more suited to New York or L.A. than the “Deep South.” Then, step next door to thumb through the record stacks at 10,000 Hz Records for vintage and new vinyl.
Finally, finish your shopping spree with a specialty coffee from open-air coffee shop Mama Mocha’s.
Southern Dining at its Best
For dinner with a view, check out the second-floor patio of Zazu Gastropub. Dine on farm-fresh Southern dishes like blackened catfish and pecan-smoked brisket while overlooking Opelika’s quaint storefronts below. Looking for something even more upscale? Try Café One Twenty-Three, offering Southern fine dining with classic French influence.
Mini Breweries
For a Southern town of a little more than 30,000 people, Opelika more than appreciates the fun of local breweries.
In 2015, two Auburn University grads paired up with an Ole Miss alum to open Red Clay. Four years later, Resting Pulse followed. Resting Pulse says their name reflects their background but also reflects the image we are striving to achieve.
Both offer laidback vibes, a rotating menu of small-batch brews, and snacks to pair!
Our local and long-distance movers know how to get you to this location and countless others. Of course, this one is a favorite because it is our home-base, and we are partial to Opelika. For more information about this great southern town and its vibe for growth and a home-like feel, contact the Opelika Chamber of Commerce. Alabama is just about as Southern as it gets, and the city of Montgomery follows suit. It’s a place where young couples, singles, and even retired folks are discovering as home.
Full of Southern charm, Alabama, and in particular the capital city is one of the most unique parts of our country. Rural areas live life at a slower pace, focus on agriculture as a cornerstone to their economy, but larger cities like Montgomery are diversified, full of residents from all walks of life, including plenty of transplants from across the country.
Many say it is the milder winters, the slower pace, and the front porch summer days that are a natural draw. We think it is all of these and much more.
A City too Busy to Look Back for Long
If you love history, you will love Montgomery, Alabama. While the city once held a prominent place during the Civil War, it is also known as the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement. That’s how flexible this city is.
Hank Williams, Nat “King” Cole, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald—to name a few—once called Montgomery home.
Alabama’s capital city just might be more progressive than you first thought. After all, it is where the Wright Brothers established their first flight school and where the first citywide electric streetcar ran.
Montgomery’s Arts Scene is Bright
Besides its well-known history, Montgomery has a vibrant arts scene. The sign that any city is on the move toward growth is its art scene. Blount Cultural Park is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival as well as the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, with exhibitions including works by artists like Rembrandt, Whistler, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent.
The city has it all—a symphony orchestra, multiple ballet companies, art galleries and an amateur theater. A multitude of restaurants and craft breweries are in the entertainment areas. Old Cloverdale is a favorite destination.
This neighborhood is also home to the Capri Theatre, a vintage movie theater that is the heart of the city’s independent film scene. And thanks to the thriving arts scene, growth planning, a flourishing entertainment district, and rapidly increasing tourism, city leaders are seeing an increase in residential relocations.
Montgomery is Home
What about the job market? It’s growing and expanding with market industries that are new to the state in fields like aerospace, education, health care, banking, and mineral extraction.
So, take a few minutes to stroll through one of the many museums or have lunch at a local eatery or brewery and you quickly find that Montgomery welcomes you to stop, enjoy, learn and be at home!
In fact, U.S. News recently named Montgomery one of the best places in the US to live and to retire.
You can even take in a night of baseball at a game featuring The Montgomery Biscuits, the city’s minor league baseball team! That’s some fun that everyone can enjoy!
There’s even a fabulous zoo that has its own history to talk about. The Montgomery Zoo began in a small downtown park in the inner city and has grown and expanded to become a premiere American zoological facility.
The Heart and Soul of the South
So, talking about making a move? Think Montgomery, and you are thinking of a city where you can literally sense the heart and soul of the south.
It’s a city where you can put down roots. A place that you can call home–filled with opportunity, new beginnings, and residents like you, who are looking for the balance of urban excitement and open spaces.
It’s a place where you can grow. Rooftop hotspots dot the city’s skyline and offer places where couples can relax to sit back and take in the sights and sounds of Montgomery’s vibrant nightlife.
It’s a place where you can live. With affordable home prices, inexpensive taxes and a low cost of living, Montgomery is a great city to stretch a salary or a pension. Family homes here cost lower than the national average, and Alabama has some of the lowest property tax rates in the nation. But the low property taxes are balanced by a state income tax and sales taxes.
It’s a place where you can move. Our local and long-distance movers know how to get you to this location and countless others. Of course, this one is a favorite because it is one of our home-bases and we are partial to the capital of Alabama.
