Moving is tough. Moving with children is even harder. As you prepare to relocate your family from one place to another, we want to assist you in the process to make it as smooth as possible.
As moving day approaches, we have a few tips for how you can make the processes more enjoyable, or at least better, for your children.
Here are some great tips you should consider:
Involve them in Shopping for a Home (Or At Least Pretend To)
Bring your child with you when you’re looking at new homes. Or, if that’s not really an option, at least take lots of videos and pictures of the homes you like. Talk about features they might like. Ask which home they prefer and involve them in the shopping process.
Some parents take this tip a little further and will actually create a family wish list of the most important features to have in a home.
Obviously, your child shouldn’t actually be the one choosing your home. But if you can at least pretend to involve them in the process, they’ll have an easier time adjusting to your new place.
Throw a Goodbye Party
Your child may be leaving behind all the friends they’ve ever known. Make that switch a lot easier by throwing a goodbye party. It helps bring closure to the friendships your kids are leaving behind. At the same time, remind kids that they can come back and visit these friends whenever you return to the town. It’s not a forever goodbye: but it is a temporary goodbye.
Give Your Child Their Own Special Suitcase and Box
Unless you have older kids, you’ll probably be packing most of your kid’s stuff yourself. But let your child help out a little bit by packing at least one of their own boxes.
Some parents will call this a “treasure box.” They might decorate it to look more festive. Put glitter on it. Color it with markers. Make your child feel like it’s their box to watch over and protect.
Prepare Your Kids for Their First Day at School
Your child’s first day at a new school may be one of the toughest days of their lives. Here are some tips that will help you prepare your kids for the big first day:
–Inform yourself about the school before the first day. Check the curriculum, the lunch program, and any after school care programs or activities. See if your child should walk to school or take a bus.
–Walk your child to school and ask if you can take a tour beforehand. Getting your child familiarized with the hallways and, better yet, the teachers, can have an enormously positive impact on their first day.
–If you move in the summer, don’t let your child stay home all summer. Instead, ask about local day camps or activities. This can help your friend make connections long before that first day arrives.
–Talk to your neighbors. You’ll find out who has school-age children and then be able to connect with those parents.
