Moving into a new house can be a momentous task. You can plan and create a spreadsheet of all your needed activities, but there will come a day when it seems overwhelming. That’s normal even for the most organized person!
As you head toward your moving date, you’ll want to ensure every detail is as perfect as possible. To help you enjoy the thought of your move and your new home, we have compiled a checklist of what to do before, during, and after your move-in day.
Things that are important to do before the Move!
As your move-in date nears, you should have a list of important tasks to be done. Keep that list handy and refer to it often. Check off your accomplished goals. Trust us: you will feel better knowing that you are working on your move in a constructive way. This, of course, is assuming you have taken care of things, such as hiring a moving company and packing your belongings.
Here’s a list of things to do and not do!
Do the Final Walk-Through
Any new construction has what is called a “walk-through” just to make sure things work. You need to plan for the same as you move into an older home. During a final walk-through, check everything in your new home is in proper working condition. If it is not, talk with your agent or your builder. Don’t agree to “it will be fixed at a later date!” Refuse to sign paperwork until you know things are working correctly.
You will want to check for any damage that may have occurred as the previous occupant moved out and ensure that everything is in working order.
Specifically, you should:
- Check the faucets for leaks.
- Flush the toilets.
- Inspect and label the circuit breaker.
- Run hot water to test the water heater and pressure.
- Test the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Test the outlets.
- Turn on all the lights and appliances.
If you notice any new issues, document them, and raise your concerns with the seller or landlord before you move in.
Make Sure the HVAC System Works Properly
While your home inspector may check your HVAC to make sure it turns on and off, their reach is limited. Checking your HVAC system yourself will help you avoid any surprises on the first night in your new home! If you notice any issues like the system is not cooling properly, call a professional to inspect and repair it.
Transfer Utilities
Here’s something people often leave to the last minute! Contact utility companies immediately to stop, start, or transfer services. You must provide your new address, move-in or move-out date, and other relevant information. You may also be asked to provide proof of identity and residency, such as a driver’s license or lease agreement. Do this at least two weeks before your move-in date. The mail will be coming to you quickly.
Update Your Address with Important Contacts
Notify banks, credit card companies, and other important contacts of your new address. Change your address on any subscriptions and insurance policies, too.
Be sure to file a change-of-address form with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). You can do this in person at your local post office or online through the USPS website.
Clean the New House
Even if the previous homeowners cleaned the house before they moved out, you need to clean it for yourself. If you are too busy or stressed, hire a cleaning company. You want your new home to be clean and safe for you and your family. Cleaning includes the floors, walls, and cabinets and scrubbing the bathrooms and kitchen.
Many local and long-distance moving companies offer this service along with a list of reputable third-party providers.
Paint and Make Repairs
If you plan to change the color of the interior of your new home, this is the time to do it—before the furniture is moved in. This is also a good opportunity to schedule any necessary repairs. Check for cracks, holes, or other damage that needs fixing.
Change the Locks
You don’t know who or how many people have keys to your home. Some clients are given one set of keys while knowing that at least eight people once shared the home! Changing the locks on all exterior doors will ensure that no one else has access to your new home. Installing new locks is a relatively simple DIY project, but a locksmith can rekey your doors quickly. It is an added cost, but you get it done!
Install a Home Security System
Consider installing a home security system or additional locks and alarms to keep your home secure. A security system can provide peace of mind and protect your home from theft or other security threats. Options include self-installed systems from companies such as SimpliSafe and Cove or professionally installed systems from ADT and other well-established home security companies.
