Beginning a move can seem like an intimidating process. There are so many things you need to do and so many things you need to worry about. But we’ve got you covered. Today, we’re going to show you how to start your move and organize your life in the weeks leading up to your move.

Step 1) Start Transferring Your Utilities and Personal Information
The further in advance you start this step, the easier your move will be. Transfer whatever utilities you can, call your internet service and cable providers, and send change of address notifications to all of the services you care about. You’re not the first person to move to a new home, and most companies make it easy to file change of address notifications online.

Step 2) Find Cheap Packing Supplies
Next, it’s time to start packing. But first, you need something to pack your stuff into. Finding cheap packing supplies can be an art form: some people go to every grocery store in town because grocery stores go through a lot of boxes. Other people roam their neighborhood looking for old cardboard boxes in the dumpsters. Here are some other ideas:

    • Call local furniture stores, which often have lots of big boxes lying around they’re just waiting to throw out
    • Call big box retailers and ask the same question
    • Check your workplace
    • Call friends and family and ask if they have old boxes, or if they can check their workplaces for boxes
    • Buy moving tape from any office supply store or department store

Once again, the sooner you start this step, the sooner you’ll be able to start packing and de-stress your life.

Step 3) Measure Your New Place and Decide What to Keep
You don’t have to move everything you own to your new home. Moving is a great time to get rid of stuff you don’t need. Measure your new home to determine which furniture can fit and which furniture can’t. You might find the queen-sized bed is a little too big for your new guest room or that the color of your old couch doesn’t suit the living room.

Decide what you want to keep and have a garage sale for anything you don’t need. This allows you to earn some money for the move while also reducing the number of things you need to move. Win-win!

Step 4) Weigh the Pros and Cons of Professional Movers
Professional movers cost money, but they also save you a lot of money. They also save you time and stress.
Some of the advantages of working with movers include:

    • You don’t need to buy moving equipment like straps, dollies, and blankets to protect your stuff
    • Comprehensive moving insurance to protect your stuff from A to B
    • Professional experience, which means they know how to move (and protect) tricky things like dining room tables, pianos, big screen TVs, etc.
    • Large vans that can move all of your stuff in one trip without squeezing things into a truck or U-Haul

The main disadvantage of working with professional movers is that they cost more than bribing your friends with pizza. That’s really the only downside. If you’re already renting a U-Haul truck, then you may be surprised at how affordable professional teams of movers can be – especially when you’re moving long distances.
